Track Begins Competition at Sun Belt Championships

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Friday marked the first day of competition at the 2014 Sun Belt Track and Field Championships.

"Day one is in the books after two storm delays," said head coach Jill Lancaster. "The day started with the combined events. Aleeah and Adria put up some great marks which produced impressive personal bests. We are excited for these two ladies to continue on this path as they finish tomorrow."

"Doug and Sam had a great day," said coach Geren Woodbridge.  "There were a lot of positives from today and they're really starting to put everything together. We still have some things to work on, but they are stringing together some great marks. We're really excited to see what's in store for tomorrow."

The Trojan men are currently in seventh place in the team standings. Troy also has two men and two women competing in the two-day multi-event competitions.

At the end of Friday's heptathlon Aleeah Stigarll is in seventh place with 2,916 points, and Adria Hill is in ninth place. Stigarll finished fifth in shot put and sixth the 200-meter dash, while Hill finished fifth in the 200-meter dash and sixth in the 100-meter hurdle. The women also completed high jump on Friday as well.

Samuel Johnson and Douglas Dyer completed the first day of the decathlon in 10th and 11th place, respectively. Dyer's best showing was a 50.38-second performance resulting in a fourth place finish in the 400-meter dash, while Johnson's best finish of the day was a seventh place finish in the 100-meter dash.

Hayes Grissom finished 4th in the men's javelin competition with a 59.87-meter throw, gaining the Trojan men 5 points. Grissom is currently ranked 75th in the NCAA in the event.

Demetris Elia brought in a seventh place finish in the hammer throw with a 56.54-meter performance, scoring two points for the Trojan men's team.

The second day of action will begin at 10:00 a.m. with multi-events finals and field event finals. The running event preliminaries will begin at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and will wrap up with the finals of the men and women's 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Thaddeus Curtis will compete in the men's 110-meter hurdles preliminary on Saturday at 5:15 p.m. Curtis is coming into the competition ranked first in the conference in the event, and 89th in the NCAA.

Julia Ostendorf will be competing in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, which will be the final women's running event on Saturday. Her time of 11:11.34 has placed her sixth in the conference. She will also compete in the women's 5,000-meter run on Sunday.

Sean Kent will run in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase. He is currently ranked 13th in the conference and received a top-10 U20 ranking earlier in the season.

Thrower Zach Douglas will compete in the men's shot put final at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, and the men's discus final on Sunday. Douglas is ranked 56th in the NCAA in men's shot put, as well as third in shot put and seventh in discus in the Sun Belt.

The Trojan's nationally ranked Ben Martin and Jordan Landburg will be competing in running prelims on the second day of competition. Martin will run in the 100-meter and 200-meter dash, while Landburg will take part in the 200-meter and 400-meter dash.
