Trojans to Begin Competition at Sun Belt Championships Friday

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Troy Trojan track and field team will be competing at the 2014 Sun Belt Conference Track and Field Championships this weekend. The Championships, held at Bobcat Track and Field Stadium at Texas State University, kick off on Friday and will continue through Sunday.

"We have trained hard since the fall for this competition," said head coach Jill Lancaster. "The anticipation and excitement are the driving forces this weekend. Day one plays to some of our strengths with ranked competitors in the combined events, the javelin and the hammer throw. We look forward to these Trojans setting the tone for the days to follow."

The competition will get started at 8:30 a.m. on Friday with the women's 10,000-meter run, followed by the men's race at 9:15 a.m. The women's pentathlon will get started at 10:00 a.m., followed by the men's heptathlon at 10:30 a.m.

Aleeah Stigarll and Adria Hill will be competing in the women's multi-event for the Trojan women, while Douglas Dyer and Samuel Johnson will represent the men's team. Dyer is ranked fifth and Johnson is ranked sixth in the current Sun Belt standings. Stigarll has made constant progress over the season in her individual events, and is currently ranked eighth in the conference for the women.

Several other Trojans will compete in Friday's field events, including Hayes Grissom in the men's javelin throw. Grissom is currently ranked 3rd in the conference and 75th in the NCAA. Samuel Johnson will also compete in the men's javelin. Mariah Pennigton will represent the Trojan women in the javelin throw.

Demetris Elia, who is currently ranked seventh in the Sun Belt will compete in the hammer throw for the Trojans, along with Matt Muntifering who is raked 18th in the conference in the event.

Other notable competitors for the Trojans include Ben Martin, who is ranked 26th in the nation and second in the Sun Belt in the men's 100-meter dash. Martin set a new season-best time in the event during the Coach "O" Invitational and will look to take the conference title during Saturday's prelims and Sunday's final race.

Jordan Landburg is ranked third in the conference and 52nd in the nation in the men's 400-meter dash. Landburg will also race in the men's 200-meter dash along with Martin.

Thrower Corina Cox will compete in the women's shot put on Saturday and the discus competition on Sunday. Cox is ranked 4th in the Sun Belt and 83rd in the nation in women's discus.
