AUBURN, Ala. – Troy's Jared Bettcher carded a 6-over 78 Saturday in the final round of the NCAA Auburn Regional at the Auburn University Club. The Trojan freshman finished tied for 71st overall as he became the first Troy men's golfer to qualify for an NCAA Regional since 2008.
"I'm pleased with the season that Jared had although he didn't play the way we wanted him to at the Regional," head coach Matt Terry said. "The experience he gained having played in an NCAA Regional will help him over the next three years of his career. He played a lot better the last two days, but needs to take some time off and get some rest."
Bettcher opened on the back nine and started his round with four straight pars before running into a rough patch on No. 14 to No 17 as he carded four-consecutive bogeys to finish the back nine at 4-over.
The All-Sun Belt First Team selection pared seven holes on the front nine around a bogey on No. 1 and No. 9. Bettcher finished with a 242 for the three rounds after shooting an 89 in the opening round and a 75 in the second round.
No. 1 Alabama won the team title by 22 strokes over No. 37 Kennesaw State while Austin Peay's Marco Iten shot 8-under to claim individual medalist honors and earn a spot in the NCAA Championship.
