Box Score - Bowling Green | Box Score - Penn
ORLANDO, Fla. – The Trojans needed extra innings in game two, but picked up a pair of wins on Friday at the UCF Knights Spring Fling, beating Bowling Green and Penn.
Troy (11-10-2) got the day started with a 3-0 win over Bowling Green (4-10-1). The Trojans needed 10 innings to decide a winner against Penn (0-1), but came out on top, 6-4.
Jaycee Affeldt was tremendous on the day, pitching 12 innings of relief and going 2-0. Affeldt came in to throw four shutout innings in game one and then came off the bench to toss eight innings without allowing an earned run in game two. Affeldt finished the day with 15 strikeout and allowed just four hits.
"I was just really happy with the effort and the way that we battled back today," said head coach Melanie Davis. "I was proud of the way we worked through the extra innings in game two as well. The team really showed that they are true Trojan warriors, through and through."
Troy will take on UT Martin at 8 a.m. on Saturday, the only game of the day for the Trojans.
Troy 3, Bowling Green 0
The Trojans got some solid pitching out of Ashley Rainey and Affeldt in game one, as the duo combined to strike out eight and allow just three hits.
Troy got the scoring started in the first inning. Ebony Wright led off the inning with a single up the middle and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kacie McAllister. Wright then advanced to third on a wild pitch and came home on an RBI single by Erica Davis.
Troy added its insurance runs in the sixth. Davis drew a walk and was pinch run for by Leah Brundidge. Brundidge stole second and then came home on a single by Alison Milam. Next up, Rachel Rigney roped a single down the right field line, plating Milam and putting Troy up 3-0.
Rigney and Rainey each had a pair of hits on the day.
Troy 6, Penn 4
Troy again got the scoring started in the first inning, this time on a grand slam by Rigney. Wright and Davis each reached base with singles, followed by a walk to Michelle Phelps, before Rigney slammed her first home run of the season.
Penn slowly chipped away at the lead, beginning with one run in the third. The Quakers added two more in the fourth and one more in the seventh to force extra innings.
After a scoreless eighth and ninth, Troy picked up the game-winning run in the top of the 10th. Milam led off the inning with a double to center field, plating McAllister, who had started the inning on second. The Trojans added one more, with Davis driving in Milam on a single.
Sara Mock got the start for the Trojans in the circle and pitched 2+ innings before giving way for Affeldt in the third. Affeldt picked up 10 strikeouts and allowed three hits over eight innings.
