TROY, Ala. – The Troy University baseball team scored seven runs in the first inning but fell to a persistent Samford squad on Tuesday, 11-9, at Riddle-Pace Field.

The first six Troy batters reached base as the Trojans offense exploded in the first inning. With Troy leading 1-0, Nick Masonia blasted his third home run of the season – all coming in the last two games – over the left field wall scoring Garrett Pitts to extend the lead to 3-0. Clay Holcomb added a 2-RBI single and Tyler Vaughn plated a run with a ground ball.

Samford (7-4) would chip away with a pair of runs in the second and fifth and single runs in the third and fourth. The Trojans pulled ahead 9-4 in the fourth when Trevin Hall doubled down the left field line to score Masonia and Pitts.

The Bulldogs would take the lead with a four-run seventh, scoring two runs on a two-out error. Samford would add an insurance run in the ninth. 10 of Samford's 11 runs were scored with two outs. Second baseman Danny Rodriguez was 4-for-5 on the day with four RBIs.

Freshman Jesse Nelson got the start on the mound for the Trojans and pitched four innings allowing four runs on seven hits. William Shell (1-1) took the loss in relief going 2 2/3 innings and surrendering four runs on six hits.

Pitts finished the game 3-for-5 for the Trojans, which extended his hitting streak to seven games and his reached base streak to 13 games. Trevin Hall was 4-for-5 on the day boosting his average to a team-high .389. Clay Holcomb finished with a pair of hits as well.

Troy (7-6) will host New Orleans in a three-game series beginning on Friday with a 6 p.m. first pitch.
