Box Score
TROY, Ala. – The Troy University baseball team fell to New Orleans, 5-3, in 13 innings at Riddle-Pace Field on Friday.
Â
Despite a stellar pitching performance from Tanner Hicks, the Trojans offense couldn't muster enough runs to put away the Privateers. Troy (7-7) stranded 14 runners in the contest, which marked the team's third straight loss.
Â
Justin Hancock gave the Trojans a 2-0 lead in the fifth with a home run, his first of the season. After New Orleans tied the game in the seventh, David Hall struck with a solo shot – his third of the year – in the bottom half to pull Troy ahead once again. The Trojans have homered multiple times in five games this season. Reese Kanter would loft a ball over the wall in right field to knot the game, 3-3.
Â
The stalemate lasted until the 13th when Hezekiah Randolph doubled to left center to score two runs and hand New Orleans the lead for good. It was the first 13-inning contest for Troy since March 21, 2009 when the Trojans defeated Western Kentucky 9-7.
Â
Hicks pitched eight innings allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits. The senior would set a new career high with 11 strikeouts in the game. Jeremy McGowan (1-1) took the loss on the hill after tossing 4 1/3 innings and surrendering two runs. Troy pitchers struck out 14 batters in the contest; it was the third time this season that opponents have struck out 14 or more times against the Trojans.
Â
Garrett Pitts extended his hitting streak to seven games with a single in the first inning. He has now reached base in all 14 games this season. Matthew Howard finished the game 3-for-5 with a walk.
Â
Troy (7-7) and New Orleans will continue the series on Saturday at 1 p.m. Shane McCain (2-1, 1.42) will face Darron McKigney (0-1, 4.72).
