TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Troy track and field team kicked off competition at the Alabama Relays at Sam Bailey Track and Field Stadium at the University of Alabama on Thursday. The first day of competition consisted of the heptathlon and decathlon, as well as men's hammer javelin.
Hayes Grissom was Troy's top finisher on the day, taking fourth in the javelin. He posted a season-best throw of 64.17 meters, the eighth best throw in the nation this season.
"Hayes competed very well in a tough field against a lot of top competition and had a season best," said coach Shawn Williams. "I am very proud of the way he fought and battled throughout the competition."
"Aleeah had a really solid day after a bit of a tough moment with a spasm in warmups," said head coach Jill Lancaster. "In all her events she performed well but more importantly became a student of the events today, realizing how all her training is falling in place. She moved up at the end of the day and we're looking forward to the conclusion of competition tomorrow."
Aleeah Stigarll is currently in eighth place in the heptathlon with 2,617 points. The heptathlon competition will wrap up on Friday morning with the javelin, 800-meter run and the long jump portions of the contest. Her best finish of the day came in the shot put, where she finished sixth with a toss of 10.40 meters. She also placed seventh in the high jump with a leap of 1.49 meters.
The Trojan men took place in the decathlon Thursday as well. Douglas Dyer finished the day in ninth place with 3,155 points, and Samuel Johnson is sitting in tenth place with 3,121 points. Dyer and Johnson will finish their event with the 110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and the 1500-meter run on Friday.
"The decathletes had a great day today," said coach Geren Woodbridge. "Sam and Doug each had performances well over 100 points better than last year around this time. Along with these improvements we saw many things we can continue to fix and work on which is both encouraging and motivating. We're looking forward to putting up some great marks tomorrow."
Dyer placed fourth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.36 seconds. He also picked up a seventh place finish in the shot put with a toss of 10.49 meters.
Johnson took fifth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.39 seconds. He also placed fifth in the long jump with a leap of 6.42 meters.
The Trojan men's and women's 4x200 meter relay teams and 1600 meter sprint relay teams will compete on Friday, along with several running and field events.
