Former Troy Golfer Ben Bates Qualifies for PGA Champions Tour Event

TROY, Ala. – Former Troy standout golfer Ben Bates qualified for the PGA Champions Tour Mississippi Gulf Coast Resort Classic this weekend at Fallen Oak in Biloxi, Miss., after shooting a 4-under in a qualifier at the Diamondhead Country Club on Tuesday.
Bates was a three-time All-Gulf South Conference selection (1981, 1983-84) and was a key piece of Troy's 1984 NCAA Division II National Championship team and 1983 NCAA Division II National Runner-Up team. The native of Havana, Fla., won the Gulf Coast Conference individual championship as a sophomore in 1981.
Included in the field with Bates are Fred Couples, Kenny Perry, Colin Montgomerie, Hal Sutton, Rocco Mediate and Nick Faldo. Bates will tee off in the final group at 12:10 p.m. on the first hole.
This weekend's tournament will be the 12th Champions Tour tournament for Bates, who played in 122 PGA Tour events and 399 Web.com Tour events.
The Mississippi Gulf Coast Resort Classic will air on the Golf Network from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Friday and from 4-6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
