BOX SCORE
Tallahassee, Fla. – The Troy University baseball team started hot and finished strong against a pesky Florida A&M squad in a 7-6 win at Moore-Kittles Field on Tuesday.
Â
Freshman Jesse Nelson (1-0), making his first career start, earned his first career win striking out six batters while allowing one run on four hits in five innings of work. Freshman Marc Skinner pitched a flawless ninth to pick up his second save of the year.
Â
Troy's offense exploded early as, just four pitches into the game, Trevin Hall launched a three-run home run to left field off FAMU starter William Carrasco (0-1). Four batters later, Matthew Howard plated two more runs with a one-out double. With Hall's long ball, the Trojans have now hit a home run in seven of nine games this season.
Â
After Howard walked with two outs in the third, Tyler Vaughn laced a double to add another run. David Hall would cap the Trojans' scoring in the fourth with an RBI fielder's choice to score Garrett Pitts.
Â
The Rattlers (3-5) chipped away at the Troy lead scoring single runs in the fourth and sixth before using a pair of Trojan errors to plate four runs in the seventh.
Â
Six Troy pitchers would see action including William Shell, who continues to be solid out of Troy's bullpen. Shell tossed a perfect eighth inning to set up Skinner in the ninth.
Â
Trevin Hall, Howard, Vaughn and Clay Holcomb all finished with two hits each. Jo-El Bennett and Nick Masonia also chipped in with hits.
Â
Troy (6-3) will again take to the road as they face Southern Mississippi beginning on Friday, Feb. 28, with a 6 p.m. first pitch.
