HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Troy University baseball team fell to Southern Mississippi 3-1 on Friday at Pete Taylor Park in the first game of a three-game series.
Southern Miss (5-5) jumped on the board first with an RBI single by Matt Durst to score Michael Sterling in the first inning. The Golden Eagles would add another run in the second on a Connor Barron RBI double. Barron also knocked in USM's final run in the sixth on a two-out single.
Troy starter Tanner Hicks would settle in to record his second quality start in three chances. The senior right-hander went seven innings allowing three earned runs on eight hits and striking out six.
Troy (6-4) would get its lone run in the third inning. Garrett Pitts doubled with one out and advanced to third on a wild pitch, Trevin Hall laced a single to left to cut the Golden Eagles lead in half, 2-1. Pitts has now recorded a hit in four consecutive games.
Conor Fisk (1-0) was solid on the mound for Southern Miss tossing seven innings and striking out 13, a career high. The Trojans scattered five hits but couldn't break through with the needed runs to tie the game.
The teams will square off on Saturday at 2 p.m. Shane McCain will get the start for Troy. The game will be broadcast on WTBF 970 AM and on TroyTrojans.com
