TROY, Ala. – The Troy men's golf team will face a stiff test right out of the gate as the Trojans open their spring schedule at the John Hayt Invitational on Sunday at the Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra, Fla.
The 15-team field features three of the top-15 teams in the country, seven teams ranked in the top 60 and 13 teams ranked among the top 100 in the latest Golf Stat rankings. The teams will face a 7,001-yard, par-72 course at Sawgrass.
"We are excited to get back out there and continue to see what kind of team we are going to become," head coach Matt Terry said. "We've been pretty lucky with the weather, with the exception of the few snow days. We've been able to practice at our facility and get a lot of work done prior to leaving for this weekend."
The Trojans, who enter the John Hayt Invitational ranked 76th nationally, will tee off at 9:33 a.m. and will be teamed with Jacksonville and Furman. Phillip Brennan, Jake Tucker, Jared Bettcher, Clayton Vannoy and Tolver Dozier will make up the Trojan lineup, while Wil Clowdus will compete as an individual.
Brennan led the Trojans with a 73.67 stroke average over 12 rounds in the fall, while Dozier (74.67) and Tucker (74.75) were not far behind. Vannoy, a true freshman, turned in the team's lowest 54-hole score of the fall after he shot a 216 at the AutoTrader.com Collegiate Classic, which included a hole-in-one.
"These are the same five guys who played at Jacksonville in the last tournament of the fall where we had our best finish," Terry said. "They seem to be ready to go with clear heads and strong focus."
Among the schools included in the field will be No. 2 Oklahoma State, No. 6 Central Florida, No. 13 UAB, No. 27 Liberty, No. 47 Tennessee, No. 51 North Florida and No. 54 Louisville.
"This is one of those events where if you beat the right teams at the right time it could spur you on with enough wins and basically an RPI to get you to Regionals," Terry said. "One of our biggest goals that we've talked about all year is knowing we're going to Regionals without having to win the conference. This is one of those tournaments and fields where we can help take care of that goal."
