TROY, Ala. – Jeff Mullahey dropped a career-high 27 points as Troy (9-15, 4-8 SBC) took down top-ranked Georgia State (17-7, 10-1 SBC), 85-81, on Saturday on ESPN2.
"That was a character win," said head coach Phil Cunningham. "Our team has worked and really fought all year long. They've been so consistent in terms of their effort and attitude, and they've gone through some ups and downs, but they never quit working and they never quit believing. To come out tonight, it was just a tremendous win."
The Trojans held a double-digit advantage inside the final eight minutes, but the Panthers went on a 16-5 run to tie the game up at 75 at the 2:41 mark. Troy took over from there with clutch buckets from Mullahey and Antoine Myers. The Trojans struggled slightly from the line in the closing minutes, but hit them when they mattered the most to secure the win.
Georgia State had previously been undefeated at 10-0 in Sun Belt play and was riding a 14-game winning streak.
Mullahey drained 4-of-6 3-point attempts on the day and finished 8-of-12 from the field. He also grabbed six rebounds and dished out two assists.
Tevin Calhoun had a solid game as well, picking up a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Antoine Myers also scored in double-figures, finishing with 15 points.
Troy used the 3-ball effectively all night, hitting 12-of-27 attempts (44.4 %). Calhoun and Mullahey each hit four, while Hunter Williams netted three.
The Trojans shot 49 percent (25-of-51) from the field and 63.9 percent (23-of-36) from the charity stripe. Troy outrebounded Georgia State 39-32.
The Trojans got up early and maintained throughout the majority of the game. They led by as many as 13 points in the second half.
The Trojans head out to Lafayette, La., next to take on the Ragin' Cajuns at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday night.
