Â
Coming off an NCAA Regional appearance a year ago, the Trojans return several veteran players including Preseason Louisville Slugger All-American shortstop Tyler Vaughn and 2013 Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Year Shane McCain. Vaughn batted .327 last season and was the second toughest player in the nation to strikeout. He was retired on strikes just 10 times in 257 at-bats. McCain finished the season 9-1 with a 3.48 ERA; he struck out 105 batters while walking just 18.
Â
Senior Tanner Hicks will get the nod in the season opener on Friday. Hicks turned in a stellar season a year ago with an 8-4 record and 3.61 ERA. McCain will take the ball in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader. Junior college transfer Cody Hughes is slated to pitch the nightcap while senior Will Starling returns from injury to start the final game of the series on Sunday.
Â
NKU finished its inaugural NCAA Division I season with an 8-47 overall record and a 3-24 mark in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Sophomore Logan Spurlin returns for his second season with the Norse after earning Atlantic Sun All-Freshman team honors last season. He returns as the team's top hitter, having batted .271 with five doubles and four home runs, including a grand slam in a 10-9 victory over Ball State.
