Troy Falls Short in Comeback Bid Against Texas State
12/30/2014 11:10:00 PM | Basketball (M)
TROY, Alabama – The Troy men's basketball team worked its way back from a 14-point hole, but were unable to take the lead as it fell to Texas State, 57-46, on Tuesday night at Trojan Arena. Musa Abdul-Aleem paced the Trojans with 20 points on the night. John Walton III and Aaron Ariri both tallied a team-high five rebounds.
Â
After leading Texas State 15-6, Troy (5-5) was held scoreless for the final 11 minutes and 35 seconds of the half, turning a nine-point lead into a 14-point deficit, 29-15.
Â
Coming out of the break, the Trojans high-pressure zone allowed them to hold the Bobcats to a mere six points while they chipped away at the lead, outscoring TXST 26-12 to tie the game at 41.
Â
Texas State (7-3) was unwilling to go down easily, as the Bobcats got hot on the floor, scoring 10-straight to earn a 57-46 victory on the road.
Â
To start the game, the Bobcats jumped out to an early 4-0 lead. Abdul-Aleem had an answer as he sank two treys to spark Troy on a 13-2 run. After a three-minute scoring drought by both squads, the Bobcats found their groove on their way to a 23-0 run to end the half with a 29-15 advantage.
Â
Kelton Ford came off the bench to add eight points for the Trojans, while swiping five steals.
Â
Ethan Montalvo, who scored a game-high 20 points, led Texas State. Wes Davis and Emani Gant both tallied double-digits on their way to 13 and 10 points, respectively. On the glass, Kavin Tilbury reeled in nine rebounds.
Â
The Trojans shot 27.1 percent from the floor on the night, their lowest of the season. Troy had 13 steals and outscored the Bobcats 16-9 in points off turnovers. The Trojans also held the advantage in second chance points, 9-6.
Â
Next up, the Trojans return to action on Saturday as they hit the road to travel to Lafayette, Louisiana to face UL Lafayette at the Cajundome. The Ragin' Cajuns and Trojans are slated to tip off at 7:15 p.m.
