12/12/2014 10:34:00 AM | Basketball (W)
TROY, Alabama – The Troy women's basketball team will be looking for the 500th win in program history on Saturday when Alabama State visits Trojan Arena at 2 p.m. The matchup between two well-rested teams will also be the final in a three-game homestand for the Trojans.
Fans can visit and take pictures with Santa Claus before the game in the Trojan Arena food court. Live stats, live audio and live video for the game will all be available through TroyTrojans.com. Fans in Troy can also hear the game on WTBF 94.7 FM. To follow the action on Twitter, follow @TroyWomensBBall.
Troy (3-3) last played 10 days ago in a 76-67 win over Samford, marking the 499th win in the Trojans' program history. Troy, which entered that game 16-of-78 from 3-point range on the season, hit 10-of-18 against the Bulldogs to help the effort.
The Trojans also committed a season-low 14 turnovers against a Samford team that was coming off of a win over Penn State, the defending Big 10 champion and a NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 team a year ago.
Sophomore Caitlyn Ramirez sparked the Trojans as she scored 21 points off the bench on 8-of-13 shooting, including 3-of-5 from deep. Ramirez, who had 17 points in the previous five games combined, was named the Sun Belt Player of the Week for her efforts.
Against Samford, the Trojans were outrebounded for just the second time this season. However, they still rank first in the Sun Belt in rebounding (43.5 rpg) and offensive rebounding (16.3/g).
Senior Ronita Garrett leads the Trojans on the season with 14.3 points and 10.2 rebounds per game, ranking seventh and second in the Sun Belt, respectively. Garrett has also posted four double-doubles in six games, the second most in the Sun Belt.
Sophomore Kristen Emerson is just behind Garrett as she ranks third in the Sun Belt in rebounding (8.6 rpg). She also ranks first in the Sun Belt, and 31st in the NCAA, in offensive rebounds (4.2/g).
Alabama State (2-3) has played just one game in the last 20 days, a 93-54 loss at WKU last Saturday. The Lady Hornets have lost three straight, including a tight 64-61 decision against Troy's Sun Belt rival South Alabama.
Sophomore Britney Wright (13.8 ppg) is the only ASU player averaging double-figure scoring. Junior Jasmine Peeples is averaging a team-best 8.4 rebounds per game and ranks 25th in the NCAA in blocks (2.6 bpg).
Troy and Alabama State met in last season's opener with Troy winning, 77-67, in Montgomery. Troy has won three straight against ASU, but still sits at 10-15 all-time against the Lady Hornets, who won nine of 10 meetings between the two in the 1970s.
Following Saturday's game, the Trojans will face a two-game road trip as they travel to take on Evansville on Thursday and Tennessee State next Saturday.
