Troy Soccer Defeats Texas State, Heads to SBC Championship Game
11/7/2014 6:51:00 PM | Soccer
MOBILE, Alabama – In a season of firsts, the second-seeded Troy University soccer continued to amaze on Friday with a 1-0 win over No. 3 seed Texas State at The Cage on the campus of the University of South Alabama. It is the first ever championship game appearance for Troy.
The Trojans (16-5) will play for the Sun Belt Conference championship at 1 p.m. on Sunday against South Alabama. The championship game will be broadcast on ESPN3.com. Links to Live Stats and Live Video are available on the Soccer page on TroyTrojans.com.
The team's 1-0 win over UL Lafayette on Wednesday was the program's first in the Sun Belt Conference Championships. Troy entered the 2014 tournament 0-6 all-time in the postseason event.
Troy struck quickly in the third minute when Paige McMillan served a cross into the box that found Mallary Hedden, who headed it in for her first career goal. For McMillan, it was her seventh career assist and first of the year.
McMillan also set a new Troy record with 82 career games played.
The Trojans put several good runs together but a stingy Texas State backline thwarted any further efforts.
Texas State (11-7-2) nearly equalized in the 50th minute when Lynsey Curry's shot banged off the crossbar. The Bobcats second chance on goal was called off for offside.
"We've been a second half team, especially in conference play. We talked about coming out and getting off to a better start," head coach Jason Hamilton said. "It was great to get off to that kind of start, but we knew the game was long from over."
Alissa Jones led the Trojans with three shots, one on goal, but failed to find the net. Freshman goalkeeper Mikki Lewis finished with four saves en route to recording her 11th shutout of the season. As a team, Troy leads the conference with 13 clean sheets, including six straight heading into Sunday's title game.
