Record-Breaking Season Ends as Troy Falls to South Alabama in SBC Title Game
11/9/2014 4:28:00 PM | Soccer
MOBILE, Alabama – South Alabama's Nikki Shirtcliffe played a ball into the box that glanced off forward Charde Hannah, bounced over goalkeeper Mikki Lewis' head and into the net for the game's lone goal as the Troy soccer team fell to South Alabama in the Sun Belt Conference championship game 1-0 at The Cage.
The goal, scored in the 22nd minute, was the first allowed by the Trojans in the last six games. Troy finishes the season 16-6 and second in the league, both program bests.
"Be proud of what you've accomplished this season," head coach Jason Hamilton told his team after the match. "You put Troy soccer on the map."
10 different players took the Trojans' 11 shots in the match. One of Troy's best chances to equalize came midway through the second half when Abby Reynolds played a ball into the box from the right side. Annabell Simpson back-heeled the ball into open space in front of the USA keeper, but the pass failed to find a runner.
Minutes later, Alissa Jones received a pass just outside the 18-yard box and fired a shot that tailed left of goal. Jones was named to the College Sports Madness All-American team earlier in the day.
Mikki Lewis, Jasmine Fahrnbauer, Alissa Jones and Mallary Hedden were all named the All-Tournament team.
Troy's season comes to a close with 21 individual and team records falling, including Chelsey Williams becoming the all-time leading scorer in program history with 25 goals. Also included are the school's wins, shutouts and shots records as well as the single-season and single-game attendance records.
