NEW ORLEANS – One day after earning Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week honors, Troy's Montres Kitchens has been named the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday morning.
With Troy leading by seven in the third quarter, Kitchens intercepted passes on three straight Idaho possessions and returned one for a 28-yard touchdown. His second interception was so remarkable that is was the No. 4 play on SportsCenter's Top 10 Plays of the Day.
His three interceptions tied a school record for the most in a game and are tied with six other players for the most nationally in a game this season. Kitchens also led the Trojans with eight tackles in the game.
Kitchens is tied for fourth nationally with six interceptions on the season and ranks eighth nationally averaging 0.55 interceptions per game. His six picks are the most by a Trojan player since Terence Moore also had six in 2008.
Kitchens leads the Trojans with 82 tackles on the season, which is 30 more than his next closest teammate.
He is Troy's second Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week recipient this season, as defensive end Jamal Stadom earned the award following Troy's victory over New Mexico State.
The Trojans are off this weekend before hosting UL Lafayette on November 29 in the season finale. The game will be the final one for legendary Troy head coach Larry Blakeney, who announced his retirement earlier this year.
