Trojans Continue Road Trip at Clemson

CLEMSON, South Carolina – The Troy women's basketball team continues its season-opening road trip on Sunday when the Trojans take on Clemson at Littlejohn Coliseum at 1 p.m. CST.

Troy (0-1) is coming off of a season-opening loss at Auburn on Friday night, 71-54. The Trojans committed 29 turnovers against Auburn's pressure defense, and the Tigers closed the first half on a 12-0 run to break open an otherwise close game.

The Trojans did force Auburn into 25 turnovers itself and held the Tigers to 28 points in the second half, but Troy shot just 22 percent in the second half and couldn't close the gap.

Ronita Garrett led the Trojans with 14 points and 13 rebounds. She shot 6-of-13 from the floor while posting her eighth career double-double. Troy's leading returning scorer, Ashley Beverly-Kelley, was the only other o score in double figures as she posted 12 points against the Tigers.

The Trojans, after finishing fifth in the Sun Belt last season, were picked to finished fifth again in 2014-15 by the league's head coaches. Chanda Rigby, in her third season, will be looking for Troy to push the tempo more than it was able to against Auburn.

Troy scored just 54 points in its season opener, that after leading the Sun Belt with an 80.4 scoring average last season, the 15th best mark in the NCAA.

Clemson (1-0) also opened its season on Friday, defeating UNC-Greensboro at home, 80-51. The Tigers' roster features nine true freshman, and three of them scored in double digits on Friday, led by Shelbie Davenport's 18 points. The Tigers went 13-19 a year ago and finished 12th in the ACC with a 4-12 conference record.

Clemson head coach Audra Smith is in her second season after spending nine seasons at UAB. On her bench is former Trojan assistant Kayla Ard, who was in Troy in 2012-13 on Rigby's first staff.

Sunday's game will be the first between Troy and Clemson.

Following Sunday's game, the Trojans will return home where they will host Southeastern Louisiana on Friday at Trojan Arena at 12 p.m.
