Troy Soccer Defeats ULM; Wins 10th Straight at Home
10/5/2014 4:35:00 PM | Soccer
TROY, Alabama – The Troy University soccer team overcame a sluggish first half to score a pair of second half goals and defeat ULM 2-0 at the Troy Soccer Complex on Sunday. The team is now 7-0 at home this season and has won 10 straight at home dating back to last year.
The Trojans (10-3, 2-1 Sun Belt) managed six shots in the first half, rarely threatened the ULM goalkeeper and fought to manage the pace of the game. After a few halftime adjustments, however, the story in the final 45 minutes was very different.
Troy fired off 12 shots in the second half, maintained possession and put constant pressure on the Warhawks back line before breaking through in the 70th minute. Alissa Jones took a corner from the left side and found Jasmine Fahrnbauer in the center of the box. Fahrnbauer's header hit the crossbar and bounced directly to Abby Reynolds, who headed the deflection into the net.
Reynolds, a sophomore from Gloucester, England, struck again in the 73rd minute. Natalie Melillo served a long throw from the left side; Annabell Simpson headed the ball towards the near post and found Reynolds streaking towards goal. The goals gives Reynolds three in the team's last two games, earning the game-winners in each. Simpson and Jones are tied for the team lead with six assists each.
"We're thrilled to win our second conference game, we're doing well at home and it's a good time to get back on a winning streak," head coach Jason Hamilton said. "We fixed all the problems we had last weekend at South Alabama. To have two wins this weekend, hopefully gets us on the right track."
ULM (7-6-1, 1-3) attempted six shots in the game. Troy freshman goalkeeper Mikki Lewis finished the game with three saves.
With its 10th win on the season, Troy is just one win shy of tying for most in a season in program history. Troy has won 11 games in a season twice (2001, 2010). The Trojans have now won 10 of their last 11 matches.
Troy will look ahead to a tough road trip next weekend. The teams heads to Boone, N.C., to face Appalachian State on Friday before flying to San Marcos, Texas, for a bout with Texas State.
