STATESBORO, Georgia – Georgia Southern rushed for 421 yards and held Troy to just 154 yards of total offense en route to a 42-10 victory Thursday night in Paulson Stadium.
The Eagles (7-2, 5-0 Sun Belt) entered the game leading the country averaging 402.1 yards per game and needed rushes of 10 and 31 yards with less than 80 seconds remaining to surpass that total tonight.
Georgia Southern quarterback Kevin Ellison rushed for 99 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries while backup quarterback Favian Upshaw added 96 yards and a touchdown on seven carries.
Troy (1-8, 1-4) struggled from the beginning as the Trojans fumbled the opening kickoff, which led a 17-yard drive and an Ellison score. Following a three-and-out by Troy, Ellison capped a 15-play drive that took over seven minutes off the clock with a 1-yard touchdown.
Daniel Warren gave the Trojans outstanding field position as he stripped Matt Breida and then recovered the fumble on the Georgia Southern 37-yard line. Warren was forced into action after starting linebacker Mark Wilson missed the game with an injury. The Trojans were also without the services of starting defensive end Tyler Roberts.
The Trojans moved the ball down to the Eagles 8-yard line before the drive stalled. Ryan Kay booted a 25-yard field goal to the put the Trojans on the board; Kay is now 7-for-9 on the year on field goal tries.
Montres Kitchens finished with a game-high 11 tackles despite missing the majority of the second half with an injury, while Warren and JaQuadrian Lewis each had nine tackles.
Georgia Southern pushed its lead to 21-3 at the half on a 4-yard score by L.A. Rambsy with 7:16 to play in the second quarter. The Eagles were driving for another score at the end of the half, but the Trojans forced Ellison to pitch the ball early, which led to a fumble and a recovery by Mitchell Roland.
The Eagles added a score in the third and two more in the fourth to build a 42-3 lead. The Trojans finally found the end zone on their final drive of the game. Khary Franklin started the drive with a 24-yard run and capped it with a 3-yard touchdown run.
Franklin finished with 62 yards rushing on just eight carries, while Brandon Burks rushed for 34 yards on nine carries and Jordan Chunn had 30 yards on five carries. Brandon Silvers and Dontreal Pruitt combined to complete 4-of-11 pass attempts for just 13 yards. The Trojans ran just 44 plays as Georgia Southern controlled the ball for 38:42.
The Trojans return home next weekend when they host Georgia State on Military Day at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 8.
