COLLEGE GROVE, Tennessee – Thanks to the sixth best round in school history, the Troy men's golf team has built a commanding 10-shot lead after Sunday's opening round of The Intercollegiate at The Grove Club.
The Trojans shot a 9-under 279 on the par 72, 7,368-yard course led by rounds of 4-under from Tolver Dozier and Jake Tucker and 3-under from Luke Moser. Troy leads Southern Miss by 10 shots, while Mississippi State and Lipscomb are 11 shots back. No. 50 GRU Augusta is 12 shots back and No. 39 Ohio State is 14 shots off the pace.
"I'm really proud of what the guys accomplished today, but we still have a lot of work to do and need to be the low team the next two days," head coach Matt Terry said. "They have been working really hard during practice, and it is nice to see their hard work pay off."
Troy's historic round was the best since 2009 when the Trojans shot a 279 at the Golfweek Program Challenge. The round was just three shots off the school record of 276, which came in 2009 and 2005.
Dozier and Tucker are tied for second and Moser is tied for fourth place heading into Monday's second round. Lipscomb's Dawson Armstrong shot a 6-under 66 to hold the individual lead.
Phillip Brennan, Tucker and Moser all had an eagle as Troy led the field with three. The Trojans finished the day with 19 birdies, the second most in the field, led by six from Dozier and four from Jared Bettcher.
Troy started its day on the back nine and Dozier stormed out of the gates with four birdies before making the turn. He traded a pair of birdies for a pair of bogeys on the front nine to finish with a 68.
Tucker sank a birdie on No. 16 around eight pars on the back nine to make the turn at 1-under. After a bogey on No.2, Tucker holed out for eagle on No. 4 and added birdies on No. 5 and No. 8 to finish with his 4-under 68.
Moser made the turn at 3-under after a pair of birdies, a bogey and an eagle. The Trojan sophomore had an eventful front nine with three birdies and three bogeys as he finished with a 3-under 69.
