10/2/2014 10:10:00 AM | Basketball (W)
TROY, Alabama – The Troy women's basketball team is hosting a meet and greet on Tuesday at Trojan Arena from 6-7 p.m.
The Trojans will have an open practice with free finger foods and refreshments provided to fans. Following practice, fans will have the chance to meet and greet the Trojans' players and coaches.
Troy opens its season with an exhibition game on Thursday, November 6, against Alabama-Huntsville. That game will tip off at 5:15 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with the men's basketball team hosting West Florida in an exhibition at 7:30 p.m.
The Trojans open their regular season on Friday, November 14, at Auburn before traveling to Clemson two days late. Troy's regular season home opener will be on Friday, November 21, against Southeastern Louisiana.
Troy finished in a tie for fifth place in the Sun Belt last season, its best finish since 2008-09. For the second straight season, the Trojans led the Sun Belt in scoring as they averaged 80.4 points per game in 2013-14, a mark that ranked 15th in the NCAA. In two seasons under head coach Chanda Rigby, the Trojans have scored 80-plus points 25 times, that after not doing so in the previous two seasons.
The Trojans return seven letterwinners, including junior Ashley Beverly-Kelley who was a second team All-Sun Belt selection last season. Beverly-Kelley averaged 13.2 points per game and had a team-high 105 assists. She and senior Kourtney Coleman are Troy's two returning starters.
Ronita Garrett averaged 7.9 rebounds per game in 2013-14, the fifth most in the Sun Belt. She and Coleman are two of four seniors for the Trojans, joining Brianna Lancaster and Aissata Maiga.
Troy will welcome five newcomers in 2014-15, including one true freshman, a sophomore and three juniors. Lacey Buchanon was an NJCAA All-American point guard at Gadsden State last season. Caitlyn Ramirez, who enters as a sophomore, was ranked as the 16th-best JUCO player in the nation as a 6-foot-2 forward at Tyler Junior College last season.
The Trojans will hold their first official practice on Monday before hosting Tuesday night's open practice.
