Troy Notebook: Defensive Pressure Leads Trojans to Win
10/11/2014 6:28:00 PM | Football
Entering Saturday's Sun Belt Conference game, New Mexico State had yet to allow a sack. Troy defensive ends Jamal Stadom and Tyler Roberts earned two sacks each. Stadom also recovered a pair of fumbles.
Â
In the secondary, Montres Kitchens and JaQuadrian Lewis each intercepted passes running the Trojans forced turnover total to four in the game.
Â
"Certainly the turnovers [was the difference in the game]. We had four more today, so that's 20 on the season in seven games," New Mexico State head coach Doug Martin said. "I don't' know if I've ever been around a team that has turned the ball over that many times in seven games.
Â
Entering the game, the Trojan defense had forced five turnovers and had recorded eight sacks.
Â
Silvers Sets School Record
Â
Freshman quarterback set the Troy FBS record with 119 consecutive pass attempts without an interception to start his career; Levi Brown previously held the record with 118 consecutive attempts in 2008.
Â
The record-setting attempt was completed with K.D. Edenfield on a second-and-12 from the Troy 42-yard line. Two plays later, however, Silver tossed a deep ball into the end zone that was picked off by New Mexico State's Winston Rose.
Â
Worthy to the House
Â
With legendary former Troy returner Jerrel Jeringan in attendance, Chandler Worthy did his very best impersonation with an 89-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
Â
The play came an early, yet crucial point in the contest. New Mexico State had just cut the Troy lead to 10-7 with 12:49 remaining in the first half, but Worthy's return helped swing the momentum back into the Trojans favor.
Â
It was the first time the Trojans had returned a kickoff for a touchdown since Jernigan accomplished the feat in 2010 at Oklahoma State.
Â
Â
Ground Game Gets Going
Â
Troy entered Saturday's game averaging just 97.6 yards rushing per contest, which ranked 114th nationally. Against New Mexico State, the Trojans pounded the football on the ground en route to a 360-yard performance.
Â
Running Back Brandon Burks finished the game with 176 yards on 10 carries. Brandon Silvers finished with 70 yards on 20 carries and a touchdown.
Â
It was the sixth time in Troy's FBS history that the team had topped the 300-yard rushing mark. It was the most rushing yards by a Troy team since Nov. 22, 2008, when the Trojans rushed for 391 yards on 55 carries against UL Lafayette.
Â
"That was sweet, being able to do that," Troy head coach Larry Blakeney said. "We've got some guys that made that happen. I'm proud of the rushing and the third down conversions. We talked about doing those two things this week. When you do that, you get rolling."
