Practice Begins for Men’s Basketball

TROY, Ala. – The regular season is just over a month away and the Troy men's basketball team has taken to the court, with fall practice beginning on Friday morning.
"We're really excited about the official start of practice this weekend," said first year head coach Phil Cunningham. "The NCAA altered the men's basketball calendar this year and gave us an opportunity to start earlier, and we are going to give the new plan a try. One of the major points of emphasis in our program is the individual attention we give our players in skill development after practice every day, and we want to get right into that action."
The Trojans bring back seven letter-winners from a season ago, including three starters. The top returning scorer is Hunter Williams, who finished last season ranked in the top-10 in the Sun Belt Conference in several statistical categories, including 3-point field goal percentage and assists per game.
The team continued to grow in the offseason with a 10-day training trip to Spain. The Trojans won all five of their games overseas as they developed their new style of play.
The coaching staff was hard at work all summer, bringing in an impressive group of newcomers that are sure to contribute from day one.
2013-14 will not be without its challenges, as Troy takes on one of its toughest non-conference schedules in recent history. The Trojans face several 20-win teams from last season, beginning with Ole Miss on November 8, in Oxford, Miss. Troy's regular season home schedule begins on November 11, against LaGrange.
Troy will also travel to NCAA Tournament participant Kansas State on December 15, and the Basketball Travelers Classic, hosted by Utah State, from December 19-21.
