DAUFUSKIE ISLAND, S.C. – Phillip Brennan led a resurgent Troy lineup on day two of the Rees Jones Intercollegiate with a 1-under-par 71 as the Trojans shot a 294 to move up two spots into sixth place.
The Trojans will enter Tuesday's final round just three shots behind East Carolina for fifth place, six shots behind second place Kennesaw State and just 10 shots behind the leader South Florida. Troy's round on Monday was three shots better than both Kennesaw State and South Florida.
Brennan, who is tied for 14th place, carded six birdies during his round on Monday on the Signature Calibogue Course at Haig Point Club as he improved by five strokes from his opening round tally. The junior from Mobile, Ala., opened his round with back-to-back birdies before hitting a triple-bogey on his fifth hole of the round. Brennan ended his round strong with birdies on three of his final six holes.
Kyle Thommesen had the biggest turnaround for the Trojans as he rebounded from an 11-over-par 83 on Sunday to shoot ever par on Monday. Thommesen swapped three bogeys with three birdies to fire a 72.
Wil Clowdus dropped six shots off his opening round score and finished Tuesday's round with 2-over-par 74. Jake Tucker, who fired a 1-under-par yesterday, was 5-over-par for the day following a rough stretch from number 13 to number 17. Tolver Dozier also fired a 5-over-par for the Trojans after shooting even par in the opening round. Tucker enters the final round tied for 20th, while Dozier is tied for 26th, Clowdus is tied for 41st and Thommesen is tied for 46th.
