DAUFUSKIE ISLAND, S.C. – Jake Tucker fired a 1-under-par 71 and Tolver Dozier carded a 72 to pace the Troy men's golf team in the opening round of the Rees Jones Intercollegiate on the Signature Calibogue Course at Haig Point Club on Sunday.
Tucker's solid opening round puts him in a four-way tie for fifth place and just three shots behind South Florida's Chase Koepka for the individual lead. Dozier is in a tie for ninth place after his even-par round.
Troy sits in a tie for eighth place following Sunday's season-opening round, but the Trojans are within striking distance as they sit just one shot behind South Carolina and East Carolina for sixth, just three shots out of fifth and 13 shots behind first-place South Florida.
Tucker, who qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championship over the summer, played an even front nine after splitting the two par 5s – he took a bogey on four and carded a birdie on nine. He birdied three holes on the back nine, including 18, around a pair of bogeys.
Dozier rallied from a double bogey on the opening hole thanks to four birdies, including one on 18, around just two bogeys to finish at even par. Four of Troy's five players ended the round on a strong note with a birdie on 18.
Phillip Brennan carded a two-over-par 38 on both the front and back nine to finish with a 76, which puts him tied for 36th overall. Wil Clowdus finished Sunday's opening round with an 80 while Kyle Thommesen turned in an 83.
The Trojans will tee off Monday's second round on the back nine beginning with Thommesen at 8:50 a.m.
