TROY, Ala. – An experienced Troy men's golf team will open it's 2013-14 season at the Rees Jones Collegiate Invitational, which begins on Sunday at the Haig Point Club in Daufuskie Island, S.C.
The field includes Liberty, South Carolina, Charleston Southern, East Carolina, Georgia State, Kennesaw State, Middle Tennessee, South Florida, Charlotte, UNC-Wilmington and Winthrop. The teams will play 18 holes on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday on the par-72, 7,380-yard Signature Calibogue Course.
Troy's lineup for the Rees Jones will mirror its five-man set for the Sun Belt Conference Championship last season. Senior Kyle Thommesen will be joined by juniors Phillip Brennan, Wil Clowdus, Tolver Dozier and Jake Tucker on the course to open the season.
"They are playing better than they have played in a long time," head coach Matt Terry said. "However, that is playing at home so we will need to see how that translates into a tournament. The biggest thing for us is to have good consistent effort and I will be pleased."
Tucker led the Trojans last season with a 74.7 stroke average and qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championship over the summer after winning the only qualifier in the state of Alabama. The Cullman, Ala., native will be looking for his second straight strong start to a season as he placed third at the Golfweek Program Challenge to open last season.
Brennan was one of Troy's best options over the final five tournaments last season as he turned in four top-17 finishes, including a 13th-place finish at the Sun Belt Championship. A native of Mobile, Ala., Brennan finished second on the team with a 74.58 stroke average.
Dozier, who qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championship in 2012, had an up and down season for the Trojans last year and finished with a 75.33 stroke average. The native of Dothan, Ala., finished tied with Tucker for third in the opener last year and tied for first a few weeks later at the ASU Fall Beach Classic.
"We need to get a good day of work in during the practice round on Saturday and really work towards putting forth consistent effort," Terry said. "This tournament field is extremely competitive and I'm anxious to see how we compete."
Thommesen, an Auburn, Ala., native, played in all 10 of Troy's tournaments last year and carded a 77.40 stroke average, which included a sixth place finish at the Pinetree Intercollegiate. Clowdus also played in all of Troy's tournaments a season ago and the Auburn, Ala., native ended the year with a 78.63 stroke average.
"We had some really competitive qualifying rounds for this tournament and our younger guys are pushing the older guys to perform better," Terry said. "You've got to play well to get in the lineup, not everybody is going to travel so you have to go and play well each time to step on the course."
