Troy Wins First in Trojan Arena, Kirkpatrick Gets 100th

TROY, Ala. – The Troy volleyball team took a very tight, 3-0 (25-23, 26-24, 25-23), match from Georgia Southern on Monday. The win marked the first in as many tries inside Trojan Arena for Troy and was also head coach Sonny Kirkpatrick's 100th win at Troy.

"I thought we played very well after struggling last weekend," Kirkpatrick said. "We are using this tough non-conference schedule to make us better and I think this win, over a very good Georgia Southern team will help us in the long run."

Troy (2-2) got a 17-kill effort from Marija Zelenovic who hit .286 in the match to lead a Trojan attack that hit .172 as a team. Georgia Southern (3-1) out-hit the Trojans at a .192 clip but committed eight more errors than the Trojans, who had just 15, in a match that was decide by the minimum six points.

Alexandra Alexander recorded 32 assists while Courtney Cohen hit double-digit kills for the fourth time in four matches this season with 12.

The Eagles were led offensively by Kym Coley who hit .455 with 12 kills and two errors. Alexandra Beecher recorded a match-high 20 digs while three other Eagles were in double digits.

Troy used five-point runs in both the first and second sets to take control late in two sets were each tied 11 times. After being tied 22-22 in the final set, Troy won two of three, including a Zelenovic kill, to claim the match. The two sides were tied a combined 31 times on the day in a match that was exciting throughout for a good Labor Day crowd at Trojan Arena.

The Trojans return to the court on Thursday when they travel to the Active Ankle Challenge at Auburn. Troy will take on Green Bay and Mercer on Thursday before playing Auburn on Friday.
