Troy Volleyball Hosts First Match in Trojan Arena on Monday

TROY, Ala. – The Troy volleyball team will play its first match inside Trojan Arena on Monday when Georgia Southern visits for a 2 p.m. matchup. In addition to playing their first match inside the new facility, the Trojans will also be looking to get head coach Sonny Kirkpatrick his 100th win at Troy.

Troy (1-2) enters Monday's match after a win over Jackson State to close the Southern Miss Invitational. The Trojans lost to Stephen F. Austin and Southern Miss before rebounding to beat JSU, an NCAA Tournament team a season ago.
The Trojans were led offensively on the weekend by Marija Zelenovic who posted 44 kills, averaged 4.00 kills/set and hit .303 in her 11 sets. The junior newcomer also posted six blocks on the weekend.
Defensively, Courtney Cohen posted 62 digs in 11 sets on the weekend for a 5.64 digs/set average, earning the senior all-tournament honors. The effort moved Cohen's career total up to 1,581 digs, just 148 shy of setting the Troy career record.
Troy played four true freshman during the opening weekend with Kiah Cheatham (2.09) and Cassie Hendricks (2.00) each averaging 2.00 kills/set or better. Cheatham hit .271 on the weekend, the second best mark on the team behind Zelenovic.
Georgia Southern (3-0) is coming off of a tournament title at the Jaguar Invitational, hosted by South Alabama. The Eagles, who will join the Sun Belt in 2014, defeated Southern Utah, Tennessee State and South Alabama on the weekend.
Jamie DeRatt was named tournament MVP after recording 37 kills and 28 digs on the weekend, including 14 and 15 against South Alabama in a 3-1 win on Saturday night.
The Eagles are coming off of a 25-7 season a year ago, including a 15-1 mark in the SoCon and a regular season conference championship. Georgia Southern returns 10 letterwinners and four starters from that squad.
Troy is 0-3 all-time against Georgia Southern, but the two sides have never played in Troy. All three meetings have come during Kirkpatrick's tenure at Troy, with the last coming last year in Athens, Ga., where Georgia Southern won 3-1 on a neutral court.
