TROY, Ala. – Rising Troy junior Jake Tucker secured his spot in the United States Amateur Championship after he shot a 2-under to win the qualifying event at Burningtree Country Club in Decatur, Ala., earlier this week. It marks the second straight year that Troy will be represented in the U.S. Amateur Championship after Tolver Dozier played in the event last summer.
Tucker advances to play at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., on Aug. 12-18 with an invitation to play in all of the majors with the exception of the PGA Championship on the line. The runner-up at the U.S. Amateur Championship will receive an invitation to play in the Masters and U.S. Open. The Country Club was the site of the 1999 Ryder Cup and the US Open in 1988, 1963 and 1913.
The Cullman, Ala., native entered the final round in third place and three shots back of the leaders. However, Tucker closed out his 36-hole day with a strong back nine to win the only qualifying event in the state of Alabama.
Tucker's road to the championship included victories over a pair of golfers from Alabama's national championship squad.
"Going to the U.S. Amateur has always been one of my dreams," Tucker told the Cullman Times. "It's really special to me."
Tucker earned second team All-Sun Belt honors this past year for the Trojans after he finished the year ranked 11th in the Sun Belt with a 74.70 stroke average. He finished outside the top-25 only once all season and closed out the year with two top-10 finishes in his last three events.
