GREENSBORO, N.C. – Competition at the 2013 NCAA First Round ended on Saturday, with three Trojans competing, including Nicolo Bolla who qualified for the 2013 NCAA Championships.
“Our program was represented well over the past three days,” said head coach Jill Lancaster. “These athletes have accomplished so much.”
Bolla threw for 62.72 meters in the hammer throw, placing ninth overall and earning his first appearance in the National Championships, taking place in Eugene, Ore., in two weeks.
“I am so very proud of Nicolo and Lizzie today,” said throwers coach Shawn Williams. “It has been an honor and a privilege to watch Bolla train every day. I know this is just a stop on the ride for his ultimate goals, but anytime an athlete gets through to nationals is a tremendous success. I am very excited to watch him throw in Eugene, his dedication and hard work has paid off and it is amazing to watch such an athlete reach his goals.”
Lizzie Clough placed 15th in the javelin, throwing for 46.04 meters, narrowly missing out on qualifying for nationals.
“Lizzie is an amazing story this year,” Williams continued. “For her to come back from two ACL surgeries and make a run at nationals is amazing. Her throw today would have qualified every other year, this was just a very tough field. So to finish 15th and make the finals is incredible and I am blown away by her determination, effort and will. She is hands down the best competitor and toughest athlete I have ever had the pleasure of working with.”
Larry Henry was Troy's final competitor on the day, leaping 2.05 meters in the high jump.
“As the seniors move forward with their non-athletic careers, we wish them the best,” Lancaster said. “Guys like Ben and Jordan are already making plans to return to the NCAA First Round and making it to the National Championships 365 days from now, and they hope to be joined by several of their teammates.”
