FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Incoming Troy men's tennis sophomore Danny Riggs will look to add another accolade to his resume when he plays in the finals of the USTA National Open Clay Court Championships on Thursday.
Riggs, who will join the Trojans in the fall, is the No.7 seed in the 128-player field and will face No.1 seed Ty Trombetta on Thursday with a USTA National Championship on the line.
The event, played at the Jimmy Evert Tennis Center, is the first leg of a four-tournament series that will be played on all four surfaces.
Riggs won his semifinal over Collin Johns in three sets, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, marking his first victory of the tournament that did not come in straight sets.
Riggs, a highly touted recruit out of high school, spent his freshman season at Cornell in 2011-12 and will be eligible to play this fall with three seasons of eligibility remaining.
Riggs, the grandson of former world champion Bobby Riggs, posted a total singles record of 16-16 at Cornell, including a 10-14 mark in dual matches.
The Pompano Beach, Fla., native was tabbed a blue-chip recruit with a five-star rating by the Tennis Recruiting Network coming out of high school in 2011. He ranked as high as 19th in the USTA Boys' 18 rankings.
Riggs won the 2010 high school doubles championship at Pompano Beach High School, and also won the National Team title with Florida in 2010 and the Florida State doubles championship in 2009.
