MIRAMAR, Fla. – Competition at the 2013 Sun Belt Conference Championships wrapped up on Sunday night in Miramar, Fla., with two Trojans taking individual victories. As a team, the men finished in seventh place with 77 points while the women took ninth with 37 points.
“We had several great performances that put us on the podium today,” said head coach Jill Lancaster. “Our staff is proud of the way they competed. Many athletes stepped up, from Lizzie to Ben to Ja-Courtney.”
Lizzie Clough dominated the javelin, winning easily with a throw of 47.28 meters, breaking her own school record and likely moving into the top-25 in the region in the process. Teammate Megan Schnuelle set a season-best of her own, finishing in seventh at 39.70 meters.
Ben Martin also came out on top on Sunday, winning the 100-meter dash in 10.50 seconds.
Nicolo Bolla finished in second in the hammer throw at 61.28 meters, picking up eight points for the Trojans. His previous best throw of the season was 65.78 meters, which qualifies him for the NCAA East Regional.
The men's 4x100-meter relay team of Benjamin Martin, Jordan Landburg, Phillip Pritchett and Neko Freeman took second at 40.54 seconds, just two one-thousandths of a second behind Western Kentucky. Landburg would go on to place fifth in the 400-meter dash at 47.46 seconds.
Thaddeus Curtis took second in the 110-meter hurdles finals at 14.09 seconds, his best time of the year. Jaron Davis also scored, placing eighth at 14.71 seconds. Larry Henry picked up a second place finish in the high jump, leaping 2.05 meters.
Brynn Forsythe and Shayla Smith both scored in the hammer throw, with Forsythe coming in sixth at 49.29 meters and Smith placing eighth at 47.26 meters, smashing her previous best.
A pair of Trojans scored in the men's triple jump as well. Myles Charley took seventh at 14.84 meters, a season best, while Delonte Martistee placed eighth at 14.73 meters.
Landburg placed fourth in the 200-meter dash at 21.30 seconds, while Martin finished sixth at 21.48 seconds, a season-best.
The squad of Adria Hill, Ja-Courtney Alexander, Paige McMillan and Veronica Bryant placed fourth in the 4x100-meter relay at 46.06 seconds, the fastest time of the season for the Trojans.
Alexander would go on to finish third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.56 seconds, her fastest time of the year. She also scored for the Trojans in the 400-meter hurdles, placing eighth in the finals.
Mackenzie Howell picked up a sixth-place finish in the javelin with a throw of 54.17 meters, while Samuel Johnson finished in ninth with a personal-best throw of 50.24 meters.
The Trojans now wait for selections for the 2013 NCAA East Regional.
