TROY, Ala. – Competition at the 2013 Coach “O” Invitational began on Friday afternoon with four events. Nicola Bolla stole the show, dominating the hammer throw and setting several records.
“It was a great beginning to the Coach “O” Invitational,” said head coach Jill Lancaster. “We saw some great results. We got some quality performances from everyone today and we're looking forward to that continuing tomorrow.”
Bolla threw for 65.78 meters, winning the competition by nearly nine meters. His throw breaks his own school and Sun Belt Conference record and moves him into fourth in the East Region and 10th in the nation.
“He had a great day,” said throwers coach Shawn Williams. “The most impressive part was his consistency. He threw three P.R.'s today, breaking the school and conference record.”
Hayley Watts took third in the pole vault, tying a season-best height of 3.10 meters. Nicole Studstill placed third in the hammer throw with a personal-best throw of 52.93 meters, the best for any Trojan this year. Shayla Smith finished fifth at 46.62 meters, a season-best.
Douglas Dyer took fourth in the pole vault at 3.85 meters, a season-best. Teammate Samuel Johnson finished fifth, also at 3.85 meters.
