In the midst of playing four teams with Top-50 RPIs in its final ten games, Troy (20-26, 7-10 Sun Belt) dropped its first home conference series this season as Western Kentucky swept the Trojans at the Troy Softball Complex over the weekend. The sweep by the Lady Toppers also marked the first time year that Troy was swept in a series by a conference opponent.
The Trojans finished 1-3 last week, picking up a mid-week win at home against in-state foe UAB, as three Troy pitchers held the Blazers to just one run to seal the victory.
Caitlin Ortiz brings her 22-game reached base streak into Wednesday night's tilt, just two games shy of tying Nikki Hollett's 24-game streak in 2011. Ortiz's .500 on-base percentage is still on track to break the Troy single-season record that was set by Jill Buckley in 1994.
Kacie McAllister's .380 batting average in conference play is tops amongst Troy players while the junior has driven in 16 of her 25 RBIs in league games. McAllister has also reached base in 28 of Troy's last 30 games.
In the circle, Jaycee Affeldt pitched 12.2 innings a week ago for the Trojans, allowing just one earned run in three appearances. The sophomore was hit with the loss against WKU in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, but held the Lady Toppers to just three runs and struck out a season-high eight batters. The right-hander picked up sixth win of the year by posting 4.2 innings of shutout work in her start against UAB last Tuesday.
No. 18 South Alabama (40-7, 16-3) enter Wednesday's contest in sole possession of first place in the Sun Belt standings. The
Jaguars swept ULM this past weekend, taking all three games in mercy-rule fashion against the Warhawks.
The Jaguars boast one of the top pitching staffs in the country and currently sit in fifth in the nation with a 1.52 team ERA. The duo of Hannah Campbell (18-7, 0.94 ERA) and Farish Beard (19-0, 1.97) have combined to pick up 37 of South Alabama's 40 wins this season.
The trio of Brittany Fowler (.411, 8 HR, 31 RBIs), Julie Moss (.388, 8 HR, 35 RBIs) and reigning Sun Belt Player of the Week Haley Fagan (.366, 9 HR, 44 RBIs) lead the Jaguars at the plate. Fagan finished 8-for-11 in three games against ULM, driving in six runs and belting a pair of home runs to lock up Player of the Week Honors for the first time in 2013.
