Trojans Sixth After Opening Round of Sun Belt Championships

MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. – Jake Tucker fired an even-par, 72, to lead the Troy men's golf team to a sixth-place standing on Monday in the first round of the 2013 Sun Belt Conference Men's Championship at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.
Tucker finished as just one of nine players at even-par or better as the lead at the end of day one sits at four-under, 68. The Trojans sit sixth at 11-over, 299, entering Tuesday's second round from the Fighting Joe Golf Course.
Tucker opened play with two birdies over the first four holes to get as low as two-under. The sophomore would bogey the fifth to the turn at one-under, before bogeying back-to-back holes on the 13th and 14th. But, Tucker bounced back over the final stretch to birdie the 17th to get back to even-par, 72, and finish the day tied for sixth just four strokes off the lead.
Tolver Dozier finished at four-over, 76, on the day tied for 28th. The sophomore opened the front nine with three bogeys and two birdies to make the turn at one-over. After dropping a bogey and birdie on the 11th and 12th, Dozier went on to bogey three of his final four holes to finish the round at four-over.
Kyle Thommesen finished with Troy's second-lowest score at a three-over, 75, to finish day one tied for 19th. The junior opened the front nine with three bogeys and a birdie to make the turn at two-over. Thommesen went on to bogey the 11th before finishing the remaining seven holes at even-par.
Phillip Brennan bogeyed three times and birdied once to open on the front nine, before dropping three more bogeys and a birdie on the 17th to finish the day at four-over, 76, tied for 28th entering Tuesday.
Wil Clowdus turned in Troy's dropped score with a nine-over, 81, to finish the first 18 holes tied for 47th.
No. 49 South Alabama led the field of 11 to open the tournament with a four-under, 284, to take a nine stroke lead into Tuesday's second round. The Jaguars' Lane Hulse leads the field of individuals with a four-under par, 68, while Middle Tennessee's Lucas Armstrong sits second at three-under, 69, entering Tuesday.
The Trojans will tee-off Tuesday morning beginning at 8 a.m. with Wil Clowdus. Brennan, Dozier, Thommesen and Tucker will follow in nine minute increments. Live scoring will be available through GolfStat.com.
