Troy Set to Face WKU for Sun Belt Series

TROY, Ala. – After picking up a big non-conference win over in-state rival UAB on Tuesday night, the Troy softball team hosts
Western Kentucky for a conference series this weekend at the Troy Softball Complex. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. for Saturday's doubleheader, while the three-game set will conclude on Sunday at noon.
With just three Sun Belt series remaining in the regular season, Troy enters the toughest part of the schedule down the stretch as the Trojans face three opponents with RPIs ranked inside the Top-50, including the Lady Toppers who enter this weekend's series ranked no. 34.
All three games can be seen live on Troy Trojans All-Access or via live stats on TroyTrojans.com. This weekend marks Alumni Weekend for the Trojans as the program welcomes back former players for this weekend's three-game set.
The Troy (20-23, 7-7 Sun Belt) pitching staff continued its recent string of nice performances in the circle as a combined effort by
Jaycee Affeldt, Rachel Rigney and Sarah Thomas held UAB to just one run on Tuesday. Affeldt tossed 4.2 innings of shutout work in just her seventh start of the season; while Rigney worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth and Thomas threw the final 1.2 innings to pick up her first save of the season.
Entering the weekend, Michaela Hamilton has been the leader of the Troy pitching staff in league action; posting a 4-1 record in in 33.1 innings of work with a 1.47 ERA. Last weekend, the southpaw threw the final four innings at FIU, and allowed just one run en route to her fifth victory of the season.
In Sun Belt play, Kacie McAllister continues to swing a hot bat as the junior leads the team with a .405 batting average in league play. The junior has hit a pair of home runs, four doubles and recorded 14 RBIs against Sun Belt opponents. Hannah Renn leads Troy with three home runs in conference action and has belted nine homers this year, which is tied for the sixth-most in single-season history.
Caitlin Ortiz's RBI single in the third against the Blazers on Tuesday night extended the senior's reached base streak to 19 games; the second-longest streak by a Trojan since Nikki Hollett's 24-game streak in 2011. The senior also enters the weekend with 11 doubles on the year and boasts a .510 on-base percentage, which is on pace to break the Troy single-season record.
WKU (28-13, 12-3 Sun Belt) enters the weekend in second place in the Sun Belt standings following a series win last weekend against ULM at home. The Lady Toppers also picked up three wins during the midweek, shutting out Belmont on Tuesday and picking up a doubleheader sweep of Lipscomb on Wednesday night.
The Lady Toppers boast one of the top pitchers in the league as Emily Rousseau (16-5, 1.92 ERA) has been the ace of WKU's
pitching staff all season long. Last season, Rousseau led WKU to a series win and tossed back-to-back one-hit shutouts of the Trojans in the final two games of the series, after Troy picked up the opening game of the with a 9-1 win over the Lady Toppers.
At the plate, WKU is led by Preslie Cruce (.371, 10 HR) and Amanda Thomas (.282, 11 HR), while Olivia Watkins leads the Lady Toppers and the Sun Belt with 24 stolen bases.
WKU's Kelsie Mattox, the reigning Sun Belt Player of the Week, recorded nine hits last weekend against ULM, homering in each game against the Warhawks and recording three two-baggers.
