TROY, Ala. – After falling to FIU in a Sun Belt series over the weekend, the Troy softball team looks to rebound in its final non-conference contest of the season as the UAB Blazers visit the Troy Softball Complex on Tuesday night at 5 p.m.
Last season, Troy (19-23) fell to UAB in the teams' lone meeting in Birmingham, as a sixth-inning delayed steal at home pushed the Blazers to a 1-0 win. In series history, the Trojans hold a 12-9 advantage over the Blazers including a 6-3 record at the Troy Softball Complex.
UAB (26-10) enters the matchup coming a series win at No. 17 Tulsa over the weekend. After falling in the first game, the Blazers won the final two games of the series against the Hurricanes. UAB's pitching staff enters the midweek contest with a 2.18 ERA and 1.93 opponent's batting average.
After falling in Saturday's doubleheader at FIU, a pair of RBI singles in sixth inning of Sunday's series finale by Kacie McAllister and Chandler Griffin broke a 3-3 tie and pushed the Trojans past the Panthers 5-4. McAllister finished the weekend 4-for-8 at the plate with a home run and four RBIs, while Griffin picked up her 12th multi-game of the seasons with two singles on Sunday.
Senior Michaela Hamilton, who enters the week with a 5-4 record and 3.72 ERA, threw the final four innings in relief against FIU, allowing just one run in the seventh to pick up her fourth win in Sun Belt action.
Caitlin Ortiz continued her streak of consecutive games reaching base, extending the streak 18 games, the longest streak by a Trojan this season. Troy infielder Taylor Smartt held the previous high with a 17-game streak earlier in the year. Ortiz's .507 on-base percentage still lead the team and the senior is currently on pace to break the Troy single-season record.
Troy wraps up the four-game homestand this weekend as the Western Kentucky Lady Toppers travel to the Troy Softball Complex for a three-game series. First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is set for 12 p.m., while the series concludes at noon on Sunday.
