ATHENS, Ga. – Sam Johnson of the Troy University track and field team began competition at the Bulldog Decathlon on the campus of the University of Georgia on Thursday. With five events completed, Johnson sits in seventh overall with 3,236 points, after posting several season-best results.
“We are proud of the way Sam competed today,” said head coach Jill Lancaster. “His is definitely making great strides in the decathlon. You do not get to compete in a decathlon every weekend, so putting all the events together is huge. He and our staff are looking forward to day two.”
Johnson began the day with a seventh place finish in the 100-meter dash, finishing the event with a season-best time of 11.44 seconds. He grabbed a sixth place finish in the long jump with a career-best leap of 6.79 meters.
Johnson leapt 1.66 meters in the high jump and threw 10.81 meters in the shot put. He wrapped up the day with a season-best 400-meter time of 53.24 seconds.
Competition concludes tomorrow, beginning with the 110-meter hurdles at 11 a.m.
