Tucker Tied for First at Furman Intercollegiate

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Jake Tucker shot a four-under par, 68 (tied for season-best), to finish day one of the Furman Intercollegiate tied for the lead and help the Troy men's golf team to a seventh-place standing at the conclusion of Friday's opening 18 holes.
After play was delayed Friday morning due to frost, play got underway as 21 teams took to the Furman University Golf Club, a par-72, 6,994-yard layout.
Tucker finished in the top-five of day one among two players ranked in Golfweek's top-50, including No. 31 MJ Maguire (North Florida), who is also tied for first, and No. 37 Scott Fernandez (Iowa State), who is tied for fifth.
Tucker got off to a hot start on the front nine with four birdies and just one bogey to make the turn at three-under. Tucker went on to fire two more birdies before dropping a bogey on the 18th to finish the day at four-under par, 68, to be one of four individuals tied for first heading into Saturday's second round.
Tolver Dozier carded birdies on two of the same holes Tucker did, as he birdied the second and sixth holes before bogeying the ninth to make the turn at one-under. Four bogeys and one birdie on the back nine sent Dozier to two-over par, 74, to finish day one tied for 37th.
Phillip Brennan turned in Troy's third-best score of the day with an up-and-down round of 18 holes. Afters shooting a bogey on the third and a birdie on the sixth, Brennan entered the seventh at just even-par. A bogey on the seventh and double bogey on the eighth sent the sophomore to three-over entering the back nine. Brennan went on to bogey two more holes and birdie two more in the back nine to finish the round at three-over, 75, and enter Saturday tied for 48th.
Wil Clowdus had a quiet front nine with just a birdie and bogey to make the turn at even-par, before bogeying four holes on the back nine to finish the day at four-over par, 76, tied for 58th.
Kyle Thommesen shot a six-over par, 78, to finish the day tied for 82nd.
No. 51 Virginia Tech shot a team score eight-under par, 280, to lead the field of 21, while No. 17 North Florida fired a four-under par, 284, to finish the day in second. As a team the Trojans shot a five-over par, 293, to enter Saturday tied for seventh with No. 86 Purdue.
The Hokies' Trevor Cone, Maguire, Western Carolina's J.T. Poston and Tucker all shot four-under par to lead the field of individuals.
The second round of the 44th Annual Furman Intercollegiate will get underway Saturday morning from the Furman University Golf Club. Live scoring will be available through www.GolfStat.com every three holes.
