Troy University Awarded 2013 Sun Belt Volleyball Championship

NEW ORLEANS – The Sun Belt Conference announced on Monday that the 2013 Sun Belt Volleyball Championship has been awarded to Troy University. The championships will run from Thursday, November 21 to Saturday, November 23 at Trojan Arena.
“Anytime we can host a Sun Belt Conference event in Troy it is a benefit to our program as well as the Troy community as a whole,” Troy Director of Athletics John Hartwell said. “We are very excited about having the volleyball championships and look forward to hosting a great event.”
“What a tremendous honor for us to host the Sun Belt Championships in the new Trojan Arena,” Troy volleyball head coach Sonny Kirkpatrick said. “It's a testament to Dr. Hawkins and our entire administration for building a facility that gives us the opportunity to host and bring people to the Troy community.”
The single-elimination, eight-team tournament will culminate with Saturday's championship match in which the winner earns an automatic berth into the 2013 NCAA Tournament. The 2012 championship match, held at E.A. Diddle Arena in Bowling Green, Ky., was televised on ESPN3.
The tournament is preceded by a banquet and awards ceremony that will be held on Wednesday, November 20. The Sun Belt Conference and Troy Athletics will release ticket information as the event nears.
The Troy volleyball team enjoyed a successful season last year that ended with a 21-12 overall record and a semifinal appearance at the 2012 Sun Belt Volleyball Championships. The Trojans finished the season 10-5 in Sun Belt play, a school record for conference wins, earning the tournament's No.2 seed.
