DENTON, Texas – The Troy softball team dropped the final game of the series at North Texas, as the Mean Green hit two home runs and scattered nine hits to defeat the Trojans, 10-2, in five innings on Sunday at Lovelace Stadium.
Mean Green starting pitcher Ashley Kirk (6-4) held the Trojans' bats in check by striking out nine and allowing just two runs on four hits.
North Texas (14-12, 3-2) catcher Taylor Schoblocher belted two home runs and drove in three runs, finishing 2-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored. Mena Green center fielder Paige Kisling recorded two hits, including a triple, and driving in three.
After falling down 1-0 early, Hannah Renn's seventh home run of the season, a two-run opposite field shot to right, gave the Trojans a 2-1 lead in the top of the third. Renn picked up two Troy's four hits in the loss.
In the bottom half, Schoblocher answered Renn's home run with her first home run of the game, a two-run shot to left field that allowed the Mean Green to retake a 3-2 lead. A sacrifice fly by Brooke Foster added an insurance run in the third to extend North Texas's lead to 4-2.
The Trojans (12-8, 2-3) had an opportunity to cut the deficit down trailing 4-2 in the top of the fourth inning by getting two runners on base with no outs. A sacrifice bunt by Taylor Smartt moved pinch runner Bailee Wetmore and Amanda Winters, who reached on an infield bunt single, to second and third with just one out, but a fly out to left and strikeout end Troy's run-scoring opportunity.
The Mean Green batted around in the bottom half of the fourth, adding five runs, while taking advantage of Troy's second error of the game and a three-run triple to the left-center gap by Paige Kisling to extend their lead to 9-2. A Troy error prolonged the inning as Amanda Winters allowed just two earned runs in the frame in her first relief appearance of the season. Schoblocher's solo home run to right-center in the fifth inning capped of the win for the Mean Green.
In her fifth start of the season, Michaela Hamilton (2-4) took the loss for Troy, throwing just 1.1 innings and allowed one unearned run, while walking four and striking out two. Rachel Rigney gave up three runs off of three hits in one inning of work.
Troy returns home for the first time in over a month and continues Sun Belt play with a three-game set against the ULM Warhawks starting on Saturday with a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
