HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Troy women's golf team, led by Sofia Bjorkman who carded her seventh-straight top-10 finish, missed the tournament lead by just five strokes to finish the 2013 Lady Eagle Invitational in third on Tuesday at the Hattiesburg Country Club.
Due to rain in the Hattiesburg area Monday, the originally-scheduled 36-hole tournament was converted to just an 18-hole format as teams got underway at 8 a.m. Tuesday morning.
Senior Sofia Bjorkman, for the seventh-straight tournament, finished inside the top-10, this time with a fourth-place finish. Bjorkman began play on the 10th with a birdie before dropping to four-over par over the next eight holes. Consecutive birdies on the second and third holes allowed for the senior to claw back to two-over, and finish the tournament in fourth, tied for her season-best finish, at 74, two-over par.
Sara Fennvik turned in her season-best finish after shooting a six-over par, 78, on Monday. Fennvik double-bogeyed the 12th, and shot one-over on the 15th and 16th, before bouncing back with a birdie on the 18th. The senior went on to bogey four of the remaining holes with one birdie, to finish the round at six-over, and the tournament tied for 11th, a season-best in 2012-13.
Langley Vannoy turned in a seven-over par performance, to record her third-straight top-25 finish. The Pensacola, Fla., native double-bogeyed twice on the front nine, to go along with a bogey and birdie, before adding three more strokes to her total on the back nine to finish the tournament tied for 16th with a 79.
Taylor McGraw struggled with play on the front nine, carding six bogeys, but rebounded on the final nine holes to finish with just two bogeys and one two-over hole, to finish the event tied for 24th with an 80.
Sydney Conrad did much the same as McGraw, as the sophomore shot bogey or worse on the first eight holes, but bounced back on the final nine to shoot just one bogey, and finish the round with a birdie. Conrad ended the tournament tied for 36th with an 82.
Troy's Brooke Spinks and Kalyn Hudson also competed in the tournament as individuals to wrap up the entire Troy teams' play at the Lady Eagle Invitational.
Spinks entered the final three holes at just four-over, but double-bogeyed the 16th and 17th to send her to eight-over. Spinks went on to shoot even-par on the final hole to finish the day at eight-over, 80, tied for 24th. Hudson finished the tournament tied for 54th with a 13-over par, 85.
As a team (Bjorkman, Fennvik, Vannoy, McGraw), the Trojans finished just five strokes off the lead behind Memphis/Southern Miss, who tied for the lead win with a team score 306, and entered into a playoff to determine the champion.
Memphis' Alex Alang won the individual title by one stroke over South Alabama's Kristen Golightly and Southern Miss' Brandi Rodriguez. Bjorkman finished just two strokes off Alang at two-over.
The women will be back in action on Mar. 25-26, as they travel to Atlanta, Ga., to compete in the John Kirk Lady Panther Intercollegiate hosted by Georgia State.
