JONESBORO, ARK.- The Troy Trojans women's track team will be competing in the Sun Belt Track and Field Indoor Conference Championships this weekend being hosted this year by Arkansas State University.
“We are excited to get the Indoor Conference competition underway,” said head coach Jill Lancaster. “Nine of the 24 athletes we have on the trip representing Troy are seniors. This group includes conference champions, school record holders and an abundance of Top 10 all-time performers. The other coaches and I are ready to see how the experience these athletes have and the training we have done all season helps in the meet.”
Senior Ja-Courtney Alexander is one of the most decorated athletes the Trojans have competing this weekend, and will help lead the sprinters in the meet. Alexander broke Troy's 400-meter dash record her freshman season and has been the record holder ever since, she reset her record at the Sun Belt Conference championship in 2011. Alexander was named Sun Belt Track Athlete of the Week earlier this season for her performance at the MTSU Invitational.
Helping Alexander in the sprint category this weekend will be senior Ashley Hall and senior relay specialist Candice Vaughn. Hall also competed in the 200-meter for the Trojans finishing with a time of 25.55 at the Samford Invitational, advancing her to ninth all-time. Vaughn finished 54th in the 400-meter dash at the UAB Invitational and was part of the relay team that scored third with a time of 4:00.11 at the Arkansas State Invitational.
Seniors Veronica Bryant and Christina Barrett will lead the Trojans in the jumps category. Bryant tied for first in the high jump with a leap of 1.63 meters at the pentathlon event sponsored by Samford University. She also picked up fourth place finishes in the 60-meter hurdles (9.26 seconds) and the long jump (5.07 meters). She placed fifth in the 800-meter with a time of 2:49.67.
Barrett also competed in the pentathlon event sponsored by Samford University. She placed fourth in the high jump at 1.57 meters and fifth in the 60-meter hurdles (9.45 seconds) and the long jump (4.85 meters). She wrapped up the meet with a sixth place finish in the 800-meter, at 2:50.29.
Senior Jasmine Patton has been a dominate force in the hurdles category for the Trojans during the indoor season. Patton's performance at the Samford Invitational helped five Trojans onto the all-time ranking list. She scored fourth in the 55-meter hurdle preliminaries with a score of 8.07 finishing the finals with a time of 8.18 scoring seventh when the Trojans previously competed in Jonesboro at the Arkansas State Invitational.
Senior Brynn Forsythe will lead the Trojans on the field side in the throws category. Forsythe took third in the shot put with a toss of 12.71 meters at the MTSU Invitational. She also grabbed third in the weight throw at 15.04 meters at the same meet. Forsythe also had a toss of 14.28 meters in the weight throw and had a distance of 10.90 meters in the shot put at the UAB Invitational.
The distance category has called for senior Morgan Paulson to take on new level's in her career, which she has succeeded in. Paulson moved to 5th all-time in the 3000-meter at the UAB Invitational with a time of 10:45.75. Paulson also claimed the 6th spot all-time in the 1-mile while at the MTSU Invitational finishing the race in 5:22.54. At the Samford Invitational, Paulson finished 9th in the 5000-meter with a time of 18:20.05, moving her to 2nd on Troy's all-time performance list.
The seniors are not the only athletes making a splash for the Trojans this season. Junior Adria Hill and sophomore jump specialist Alexus Cobb are two returning athletes who have made strides for the Trojans this year and hope to continue building on this momentum. Freshman newcomers Julia Ostendorf and Aleeza Kempton have already put their names on the ranking lists for the Trojans and will continue to move up in the rankings going into the outdoor season, following the indoor conference championship.
“We expect everyone who puts on the Trojan uniform to step up,” Lancaster said. “Historically our best performances come during the championship meet. We look forward to the challenge ahead and the possibility of making big improvements from our 2012 finish.”
