John Hartwell is a visionary leader, which is necessary to successfully oversee an athletic program like Troy University.
The right person must be bold in their approach, be strong in marketing and dream big – really big.
Most of all, actions must follow talk.
It appears Hartwell, hired as the Troy athletics director this past fall, is the kind of person who follows through.
The Mobile native arrived in Troy with a sparkling resume after nine years of service at Ole Miss, where he worked his way up to the title of Senior Executive Athletic Director. In simple terms, he had his hands in a little bit of everything within the Rebels' athletic department, from fund raising to merchandise sales.
Hartwell was drumming up support for his new school on Tuesday as the guest speaker at the Dothan-Houston County Rotary Club meeting; giving details of some projects being kicked off.
Construction on a wonderful new state-of-the-art practice facility for the golf team is scheduled to begin in several months, and upgrades in the tennis and softball facilities are to come.
Yet the real revenue producer within any college athletic department revolves around basketball and football.
The new Trojan Arena, which opened this season, is in my opinion the finest basketball facility in the state and one of the best in the country. Without a doubt, it has the 'Wow' factor.
