TROY, Ala. – Free throws were the story as Troy (3-3) knocked off Alcorn State (3-4), 73-70, in double overtime on Monday night at Trojan Arena. Troy did not hit a field goal in the two overtimes, but went 13-of-16 from the line to secure the win.
"We needed a win," said head coach Phil Cunningham. "Last Tuesday hurt our confidence and we needed to bounce back and we needed to have that good feeling in the locker room. It doesn't matter how pretty it is, when you leave that locker room with a win, you feel good about yourself."
The Trojans got to the line often late, attempting half of their free throws in the extra periods. Troy shot 81.3 percent (26-of-32) from the line on the game.
The ball just wasn't falling for the Trojans during the overtime periods, as Troy went 0-of-10 from the field and 0-of-5 from beyond the arc.
The Trojans needed a tip-in by Wes Hinton with four seconds left in regulation to force the first overtime. Hinton also did his part to force the second overtime frame, hitting a clutch free throw with 23 seconds to play.
The Trojans started the second half with a 12-2 run, pulling ahead by double-digits. From there, the Braves went on a 12-0 run of their own, holding the Trojans scoreless for nearly seven and a half minutes. Both teams stayed through the final minutes of the game, with neither team leading by more than four points inside the final 12 minutes.
All five starters for the Trojans scored in double-figures, led by Antoine Myers' 19. Hinton and Kevin Thomas each pulled in double-doubles with 15 points and 12 rebounds apiece.Â
The game was Troy's first double-overtime win since defeating the University of Louisiana at Lafayette 75-73 in two overtimes on February 11, 2006.
As a team, Troy shot 33.8 percent (22-of-65) from the field and 13.0 percent (3-of-23) from beyond the arc. The Braves shots 29-of-72 (40.3 %) from the field and 6-of-21 (28.6 %) from range.
Troy was solid on the glass, outrebounding Alcorn State 51-41. The Trojans picked up a season-high 21 offensive rebounds.
Troy's next game comes on Saturday, December 7, when in-state rival Alabama State comes to Trojan Arena. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
