Team Effort, Solid Defense Pushes Troy Past Alabama State

TROY, Ala. – The Troy men's basketball team (4-3) is on a winning streak for the first time this season after knocking off Alabama State (3-3), 85-69, at home on Saturday afternoon.

"We got off to an early lead there," said head coach Phil Cunningham. "It looked like we had a chance to maybe extend it. Credit Alabama State, we knew how hard they always play, they fought back."

Troy took an 11-10 lead early in the first half and didn't look back, staying up for the rest of the game. Alabama State made a surge early in the second half, but the Trojans held strong, on their way to a 16-point win.

Troy shared the ball well all night, as eight different Trojans got on the scoreboard and four scored in double-figures. Kevin Thomas and Antoine Myers each scored 19 points on the day, pacing the Trojans. Thomas also grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.

Jeff Mullahey had a strong performance off the bench, scoring 16 points and picking up a team-high three steals.

In all, four Trojans scored in double-figures, as Wes Hinton finished with 11 points of his own.

Troy found its shot against the Hornets, finishing at 54.4 percent (31-of-57). The Trojans improved from distance, hitting 5-of-17 (29.4 %) attempts. Troy outrebounded Alabama State 34-32.

Troy trailed 10-9 early in the game, but used a 13-0 run to take a 12-point lead, its largest of the half.

A long road trip awaits the Trojans following the end of finals week. Troy will take on Kansas State on Sunday, December 15, before heading out to Logan, Utah, for the Basketball Travelers Classic, hosted by Utah State.
