OXFORD, Miss. – For the second consecutive year the Troy men's basketball team will kick off the regular season against a Southeastern Conference opponent as it travels to face Ole Miss at Tad Smith Coliseum on Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
Last year, the Trojans knocked off Mississippi State to christen Trojan Arena. Now, Troy looks to start the Phil Cunningham era with another marquee victory. Cunningham was hired in March to head the program.
Troy returns seven players including six seniors. One of them, Hunter Williams is a preseason All-Sun Belt selection and is the team's leading returning scorer. In 33 games, he averaged 10.4 points per game and led the team with 109 assists.
The Trojans defeated Victory University, 105-68, in the team's lone exhibition game. Williams led the charge with 23 points followed by Antoine Myers with 19. Tevin Calhoun turned in a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Ole Miss enters the game as the reigning SEC Tournament champion. Two starters - Marshall Henderson and Jarvis Summers – return for the Rebels with a combined 94 starts under their belts. Ole Miss defeated USC-Aiken, 75-70, in overtime in an exhibition game.
Head coach Andy Kennedy is all-time winningest coach in Ole Miss history and has led the school to six 20-plus win seasons in seven years at the helm.
Friday's contest marks the eighth meeting between Troy and Ole Miss. The Rebels hold a 7-0 advantage in the previous meetings with the last coming in the 2010 National Invitational Tournament.
