Trojans Fall at WKU, Earn Eighth Seed at Championships

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Troy volleyball team dropped its final regular season match of the season on Sunday, falling at WKU in three sets, 3-0 (25-19, 25-8, 25-11). The Trojans and Lady Toppers will meet again in just four days when they square off in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Championships on Thursday at Trojan Arena.
Troy (12-20, 7-11) will be the No. 8 seed in the tournament while WKU (27-5, 17-1), the Sun Belt regular season champion, will be the No. 1 seed. The Trojans and Lady Toppers will meet at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday night.
For tickets to the three-day tournament, call the Troy ticket office directly at (334) 670-3680. Full tournament passes for adults are $20 while single-day passes are $10. For children age 12 and under, tournament passes are $10 and single-day passes are $5.
Troy and WKU have met twice before in the Sun Belt Championships with the Lady Toppers winning quarterfinal matchups in 2005 and 2011. Last season on WKU's home floor in Bowling Green, Ky., Troy won its first Sun Belt Championships match, defeating Louisiana-Lafayette in the quarterfinals, but fell to North Texas in the semifinals.
Troy is 0-21 all-time against WKU, including two losses in three sets this season. The Lady Toppers, who have won the last two Sun Belt Championships, enter the tournament having won 11 straight matches.
The Trojans enter next week's tournament having won three of their last four, including a road win at Georgia State on Friday to clinch a spot in the tournament. The lone loss over the final two weeks came at WKU on Sunday.
Troy had just a -.029 attack percentage in the match while WKU hit .341 as a team. Kayla Pickart's six kills led the Trojans while Symone Shaw had five. Courtney Cohen was the lone Trojan with double-figure digs as she posted 12.
The first set was tight as the two teams were tied as late as 18-18, but WKU scored six straight to take control before winning 25-19. Leading 6-4, the Lady Toppers scored nine straight in the second set on their way to a 25-8 win. With the scored tied at 6-6 in the final set, WKU scored eight of nine to take control on its way to a 25-11 win.
WKU was led by Haley Bodway's nine kills followed by eight apiece from Paige Wessel and Noelle Langenkamp. The three combined for just five attack errors.
